Imagining Balenciaga

Blog by London Fashion Illustrator Elyse Blackshaw

This June I illustrated the Paris Haute Couture Balenciaga collection for SHOWstudio. I challenged myself to try and sketch all 39 looks in less than 30 minutes.

The results were fluid, expressive. Capturing the essence of live illustration from the humble surroundings of my London art studio. When working in my studio, I tend to create more detailed illustrations because I have the time to do so, yet this challenge unleashed a freedom of minimal representation with maximum energy. I wanted to explore how these Balenciaga illustrations could be used in an imaginary collaboration by experimenting with how these vivacious lines could transform luxury packaging.

Stunning? I agree.

As you can see, fashion illustrations do not have to be used in the traditional sense of applying the whole figure to a product. The image can be enlarged to fill a space and magnify the energetic marks within the illustration to create a playful yet sophisticated design.
